Jack Scruby was inspired to create these figures by the the novel, "Death to the French" by C.S. Forrester (which will provide a host of ideas for games), namely Lance Corporal Dodd of the 95th Rifles, and Carabinier Sergeant La Duc of the French Light Infantry.

These individualistic 45mm Napoleonic miniatures perfect for skirmish gaming and will  provide for some sharp and exciting action between groups of elite soldiers (Sergeant LaDuc's Patrol & Corporal Dodd's 95th Rifle Patrol) during the Peninsular War.

British Rifleman - 4515 - on Mike Taber's painting desk..

Jack Scruby designed these figures in 45mm, which does indeed seem to be a rather odd scale. It is however a very good scale, price is reasonable - 54mm would have meant too high a price. And then on the other hand the figures are more easily thought of as individuals than, 30mm because they are so much larger, which allows for more detail. The size also makes them much easier to convert or animate, and paint! When it comes to terrain, 54mm scale buildings, etc., are really much nearer to 45mm, so the figures fit quite well.

The British figures can be painted as the 95th Rifles, as Scruby designed them, or as the other Rifle regiment; the 60th. If one (carefully) trims off the shako cords the figures can be used as British Light Infantry. If one is searching for something a bit different, the King's German Legion (who fought with the British in the Peninsular) might be a good choice. The King's German Legion Rifle Regiment wore the same uniform as the 95th (with brass instead of silver metal buttons, buckles, etc.) There are indeed other possibilities, such as the Loyal Lusitanian Legion or, as I have done, Portuguese Cacadores.

For the French too, there are many possibilities, all on the same basic coloring scheme as the Light Infantry. If you can locate a copy of Rene North's Soldiers of the Peninsular War you will be able to find plenty of details. The Voltigeur figures can be painted as Chasseurs also - only the bayonet was carried, and if you were to file the tassel off the boots as Voltigeurs of the Line, or as Line Battalion Companies (but again only the bayonet). The Swiss are another possibility…
